Elizabeth H. Karnes
Elizabeth H. (Bonnie) Karnes (nee Hinchcliffe) died peacefully on October 20, 2026, with family by her side. Bonnie lived most of her life in the Philadelphia area. She devoted many years to the Presbyterian church. She was secretary at Mayfair United Presbyterian Church, where her beloved late husband John E. Karnes was pastor. She supported and contributed to his mission to create a unique and wonderful youth program to help young people in the area find support and fellowship. She helped deliver on key milestones leading to the updated publication of The Presbyterian Hymnal (1990). And she tirelessly provided support to the Executive Presbyter of the Presbytery of Philadelphia for many years, where her commitment was exemplary. In retirement, she was a devoted pet sitter for Paws & Claws.
Bonnie was a loving and devoted mother to her children. Her caring and generosity significantly impacted the lives of her family, friends, colleagues, and all with whom she came into contact. She was a fierce advocate for social justice, giving her time and money to many causes in order to make the world a better place. She loved cheering on the Eagles with family and neighbors. And she was crazy about music, especially rock ‘n roll, attending concerts into her 80s. Her light will live on in all those whose lives she touched so beautifully.
Bonnie is survived by her daughter Barbara Ann Wismer and son James Dale Wismer (Alice Doosey); step daughters Beth Reyes (Felix), Deanna Sulonon (Erik), and Heather Church (Charley); sister Jane Gregoire (Tim); and sister-in-law Pat Hobbs-Hinchcliffe.
Relatives and friends are invited to Bonnie’s visitation on Friday, October 30th, 10:30 to 11:30am at Mannal Funeral Home, 6925 Frankford Avenue (at Tyson). Her service will follow at 11:30am. Interment is at Magnolia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to Pennsylvania SPCA.
