E. Maxwell Rowland
Rowland E. Maxwell, Oct 17, 2016, a sharpshooter Army veteran. A retired Head of Procurement for the City of Phila. Beloved husband of the late Doris D. (nee Redmond) Rowland. Loving father of Melinda L. Rowland, Megan M. (Samuel) Giampietro, Cynthia P. (Howe) O’Donnell, Sean M. (Pamela) Rowland and Erik J. (Angie) Rowland. Brother of Marietta (Gordon) Andersen and the late Jonathan Rowland. Also survived by 11 grandchildren. Son of the late Edwin Montayne Rowland and Elizabeth Rose Rowland (nee Yoho). Max grew up in the Holmesburg section of Phila. He is from the Rowland family of the historic Rowland Shovel Mill who made shovels and spades for the Civil War and after whom Rowland Avenues in Philadelphia and Cheltenham are named. He earned his Master’s Degree in local government from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Max married his sweetheart that he had met at Holmesburg Baptist Church. Together they had 5 beautiful children and they lovingly raised many foster children. They loved their summer home in Ocean City, NJ and shared many wonderful memories with their children and grandchildren. Max was professionally accomplished and was the Administrator of Phila. General Hospital. He worked for the City of Philadelphia which included special projects at the Franklin Institute and with the Phila. Fire Department. He was very proud of his work in establishing a safe house for abused and homeless women in Frankford. He served as a Chief Operating Officer for the Brotherhood Mission serving the homeless of Philadelphia and was President of the Historic Trustees of the Lower Dublin Academy which was incorporated in 1794, an organization that performs community service in Holmesburg. As the family historian Max has passed down to his children a rich heritage that dates back to the Colonial period, when the Rowland family first established themselves in Philadelphia and Cheltenham Township. He is a direct descendant of Captain Jonathan Rowland who served in the Revolutionary War. His children are very proud of his accomplishments and always considered him to be “the smartest man they ever knew”.
