Caroline Rose Willms
Caroline Willms, 93, passed away on June 24, 2022, at Paul’s Run in Philadelphia, PA. A life-long resident of Philadelphia, Carol was the only child of Sophie Mueller and Frederick Willms. She graduated from Frankford High School in 1947 and received both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education from Temple University. Carol taught elementary school at Thomas Holme Public School from 1952-1991.
Following her retirement she travelled, took classes in her beloved opera, continued to attend operas at the Metropolitan whenever possible, rooted for the Phillies, and became a docent at the Philadelphia Zoo. Carol was a devoted cat lover and shared her home with many felines over the years.
An active member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in northeast Philadelphia, Carol became the first female president of the church council. She also sang in the choir and played handbells for many years. Volunteering became a way of life and Carol received the Gold Volunteer Award in 2012 for 250 volunteer hours at St. John’s Feast of Justice.
Carol continued volunteering after moving to Paul’s Run in 2004 and in 2017 she received an award from the Friends of Paul’s Run for outstanding leadership and lasting contribution.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church on Saturday, July 16, 11:00 AM, preceded by visitation at 10:00 AM. The church is located at 3101 Tyson Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19149.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Carol’s memory either to St. John’s or to Feast of Justice which provides food, clothing, education, and counseling, serving NE Philadelphia and beyond. Both are at the above address.
