Mary L. Schneider
Mary Louise (Magdaleno) Schneider of Philadelphia passed away on April 24, 2020, from Covid-19 at the age of 91. Born in Philadelphia in 1928, Mary moved to Mexico City at the age of 3 with her maternal grandmother after her young mother died. She lived in Mexico City until 1941, when she and her two siblings returned to live with their father in Philadelphia. Mary graduated from Kensington High School.
Mary met the love of her life, George H. Schneider, and they were married from 1956 until their deaths in April 2020. His passing from Covid-19 came just three days after hers. They were a shining example of love and wonderful role models to their two daughters, Marylee Sauder (Rick) of Lancaster, PA and Jean Schneider of New York City; and to their beloved granddaughters, Nicole Sauder and Maria Sauder. She is also survived by her dear brother, Frank Magdaleno (Janet).
Mary was a faithful Christian and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, where she served as a Deacon, Assistant Treasurer and as an active member of the Women of First Church. She and George participated in church mission trips to Mexico, where Mary used her Spanish to serve as an interpreter for the group.
After raising her daughters, Mary first worked as a bookkeeper for a physician’s office in Northeast Philadelphia, and then for almost 30 years kept the books for a prominent investment adviser in Center City Philadelphia. She enjoyed her work and continued it full-time until she was in her mid-80s.
Mary enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and could be seen supporting her daughters, and later her granddaughters, at all of their music performances and sporting events. She enjoyed attending Philadelphia Orchestra concerts, chamber music concerts, the opera and Phillies games, where she and George has partial season tickets for years. Mary had a huge heart and was loved by everyone who knew her.
A joint memorial service will be held for Mary and George at a later date when the coronavirus pandemic has passed. Memorial gifts may be sent in Mary and George’s honor to First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, 201 South 21st Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19103, or the Settlement Music School, 416 Queen Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19147
Mary loved mercy, acted justly and walked humbly with her God as she believed in his salvation.
Seeing Mary at Sunday services and Coffee Hour afterwards was like seeing my own mother, always a warm hug from such a loving, caring, genuine soul.
Wonderful memories ofMary on our trips to Mexico. She was the best of humanity.
Mary sparkled with love of life. She expressed that love to all around her — from George, Marylee, Jean, and her grand daughters to strangers who quickly felt her genuine value of every human being. Mary and George left their two daughters to carry on. Indeed they will.
Dear Jean and Marylee:
Please accept my sincere sympathy in the death of your mother. For the many years that I have known her, she was the sweetest person one can meet. She always had a smile and it came from her heart; she had that glow that comes from loving God. May she rest in peace. Love, Violet Cali and Nunci in my heart
A lovely couple, always upbeat. Mary and George saw the best in everyone and were an excellent living example in practicing of their faith. Rare gems.
